Feast of Saint Rosalia

On 24 September Vicari celebrates Saint Rosalia, one of the town's two patrons alongside Saint George the Martyr, on 23 May, to whom the mother church is dedicated.
Vicari changed hands the way a farm does: from the Chiaramonte to the Valguarnera, who in 1408 sold it to Gilberto Talamanca; two years later it passed to Federico Ventimiglia, then to the Alliata, the Squillaci, and finally the Bosco-Bonanno, who held it for two centuries and made it a county.
Above the town the castle remains, on a spur visible from far off: the settlement goes back to Byzantine times, between the seventh and ninth centuries, and digs inside the castle have turned up older finds still. Giuseppe Attardi was born here in 1923, the molecular biologist who in Pasadena studied the DNA of mitochondria. There are 2,948 residents.
