Monterosso Almo

In December 1979 Tele Monte Lauro was born in the town, a small station watched across three provinces. It did not last: in January 1982 its equipment was sold to a Palermo company of the Fininvest group, and the television of Monterosso dissolved into the circuit that was becoming Canale 5.

The town lies in the Iblei mountains, below Monte Lauro, the northernmost in the Ragusa area: one of the province's three mountain comuni, and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. On 11 January 1693 the earthquake that flattened eastern Sicily killed about two hundred people here; the chapel of Sant'Antonio and the Mulino Vecchio survived, and the town was rebuilt higher up. There are 3,183 residents.

Monterosso Almo celebrates Saint John the Baptist, patron and protector of the town, on the first Sunday of September, and Our Lady of Sorrows, main patroness, on the third Sunday of the same month; the earthquake of 11 January 1693 caused around 200 deaths and razed almost the whole town.
