In 1873 the town gave itself a Greek surname: Eubea, from the colony that the Chalcidians of Leontinoi are said to have founded here in 650 BC and that Gelon razed in 482. A local scholar, Luca Francesco La Ciura, convinced the council.
Licodia, on the other hand, would be the wolf: lykos in Greek, and a wolf stands in the arms. The town is in the Iblei mountains, above 600 metres, spread over two hills, that of the Castle and that of the Calvary. In the sixteenth century, with the Santapau and all the noble families living here, they called it little Palermo; of the castle, after the earthquake of 1693, only ruins remain. There are 3,047 residents.

On 20 July Licodia Eubea celebrates Saint Margaret of Antioch in Pisidia: the celebrations, though, begin at the start of the month, in the «mese margheritiano».
