Buccheri is the highest town in the Syracuse area and in all the Iblei: 820 metres on the northern flank of Monte Lauro, with outlying districts higher still, above 900. It snows every winter, and in summer it is the coolest place in eastern Sicily.
The Norman castle on the hill was held from 1282 by Alaimo di Lentini, one of the leaders of the Vespers, who stayed here now and then with his wife Macalda di Scaletta. The earthquake of 1693 flattened nearly everything: the town was rebuilt lower down, towards the little valley, and the church of Sant'Antonio looks over it from the top of a staircase built in 1911. There are 2,133 residents.

Buccheri celebrates Saint Ambrose on 7 December; the town also holds the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot on 17 January and that of the Madonna della Provvidenza on the first Sunday of July, celebrated in a church rich in Baroque features with a long staircase.
