Founded on 2 May 1607 and named after the countess Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, it is a chequerboard town in the farming heart of the Ragusa area — and the home of Sicily's only DOCG wine: the Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the red of frappato and nero d'Avola that smells of cherries. The wineries of the plain can be visited, glass in hand.
It is the youngest town in the province, and you can see it: wide straight streets, regular blocks, no alleys. And yet it is the eighth comune in Sicily by population, the second in its own territory after Ragusa. In piazza del Popolo, the neoclassical municipal theatre and the basilica of San Giovanni Battista tell of nineteenth-century pride; nearby Scoglitti lays out sunsets and fish on the sand. A hard-working land of greenhouses and markets: the Sicily that works, with good grapes.
