Vittoria

Province: Ragusa · Region: Sicily · Population: 61,006 · Postal code: 97019

Founded in 1607 and named for countess Vittoria Colonna Henriquez, it is a grid-planned town in the agricultural heart of the Ragusa province — and home of Sicily's only DOCG wine: Cerasuolo di Vittoria, the frappato-and-nero-d'Avola red that smells of cherries. The plain's wineries welcome visitors, glass in hand.

On Piazza del Popolo, the neoclassical municipal theatre and the basilica of Saint John the Baptist speak nineteenth-century pride; nearby Scoglitti serves sunsets and seafood on the sand. A hardworking land of greenhouses and markets: the Sicily that labours, with excellent grapes.
