Avola

Province: Syracuse · Region: Sicily · Population: 31,328 · Postal code: 96012

Avola gave its name to two glories: nero d'Avola, Sicily's most celebrated red, and the "pizzuta" almond, the queen of almonds that confectioners worldwide compete for in sugared sweets and granitas. The town itself is a manifesto: razed by the 1693 earthquake, it was rebuilt on the plain to a hexagonal plan, an urbanistic one-off still legible from its squares.

The golden-sand seafront looks toward Capo Passero; behind, the Cavagrande del Cassibile reserve opens canyons and rock pools for walkers. Almond granita compulsory, naturally.
