Referred to by its inhabitants using the Sicilian name Miliḍḍi, Melilli is a municipality that registers a population of 13,076 residents. Administratively, the town operates within the Province of Syracuse.
The settlement is positioned in the southeastern quadrant of Sicily. It lies roughly 20 kilometers northwest of Syracuse and 190 kilometers southeast of Palermo, a location that places it firmly outside the island's northern coastal routes.

Melilli celebrates Saint Sebastian on 4 May; according to legend, his statue arrived by sea at Marina di Melilli on 1 May 1414 and miraculously became too heavy to be taken elsewhere, giving rise to the devotion of the «nuri», the barefoot pilgrims dressed in white.
