A noblewoman carried this town's name all the way into a royal palace: Lucia Migliaccio, Duchess of Floridia, morganatically married King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in 1814, and Naples' hilltop Villa Floridiana is named after her title. The Sicilian fief behind that title is today's town of 22,685 residents.
Founded in the seventeenth century and rebuilt on a grid after the 1693 earthquake, like the rest of the Val di Noto, Floridia keeps its chessboard layout and a dialect that calls it Ciurìddia. Syracuse is fifteen minutes away, and the town remains its most immediate agricultural hinterland.

Floridia celebrates Mary Most Holy Immaculate on 8 December; on the eve, the faithful process to the mother church from the church of the Carmine with decorated candles, recalling the old custom of the «scupiddi», the brooms once used to sweep the streets as the statue passed.
