On 2 October Priolo Gargallo celebrates the Holy Guardian Angels; the annual fair in honour of the patron was authorised as early as 1849.
The name is in two pieces and they come from two worlds. Priolo would come from the Greek priolos, prior, because in Byzantine times this land belonged to the Church; Gargallo is the surname of marquis Tommaso, who founded the modern town in the nineteenth century.
Long before there was Thapsos, on the peninsula: a Bronze Age settlement that traded with Phoenicians and Greeks, as the finds in the tombs between 1300 and 1000 BC show. At first people lived in round huts of branches; then, after contact with the Aegean, the houses became rectangular, with pebble floors. There are 12,167 residents.
