King Francis II of the Two Sicilies spent his final days in this northern Italian town, dying here in 1894 beneath the watchful presence of an ancient hilltop castle. The fortress rests on sheer limestone cliffs that shoot up like a protective wall behind the historical center.
Today, Arco is home to 16,871 residents, making it the fourth-largest municipality in the autonomous province of Trento. Part of the Alto Garda and Ledro community, the settlement was historically known by the German names Arch or Ark.
