Drena

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 551 · Postal code: 38074

The castle stands on a spur that closes the valley, and was raised in the twelfth century to watch over the traffic along the river. It stayed with the counts of Arco until 1703, when French troops under the Duke of Vendôme, who had come up into Trentino during the War of the Spanish Succession, burned it. From then on it was a ruin: for two centuries the village took stone from it to build with, and shepherds sheltered themselves and their flocks inside. The province has restored it without rebuilding it, leaving it a ruin, and today it holds an archaeological museum; from the keep you look out over the whole valley.

The castle can also be reached from below, by climbing the gorge the Sallagoni stream has cut into the rock: an equipped via ferrata runs between walls that nearly touch and crosses a rope bridge right beside a waterfall. The rest of the municipality is chestnut wood and high meadow, with the alpine troops' little church at Malga Campo and an open-air art gallery, the Open Air Gallery.
