Feast of Saint Lawrence
📅 Every year, on 10 August
On 10 August Fierozzo, a municipality of 481 inhabitants in the province of Trento, celebrates its patron Saint Lawrence (san Lorenzo).
Fierozzo — Vlarotz in Mòcheno, Florutz in German — is one of the villages of the Fersina valley where Mòcheno, a Germanic language, is spoken: in the census of 2021 eighty per cent of the inhabitants gave it as their own. The name, on the other hand, comes from the Latin flos, flower: in 1324 the place was written in Monte Floruci. There is no real centre, because these slopes were settled in scattered farmsteads, and the districts are still named as they looked from the valley below: Auserperg is the outer mountain, Inderperg the inner mountain, Mitterperg the middle one.
The town hall is at San Felice; the other hamlet is San Francesco, and on the hill above the village the church of San Lorenzo stands in ruins. Two surviving buildings speak of how these people lived: the Filzerhof farmstead, now an ethnographic museum, and the sawmill at Valcava, which in Mòcheno is called De Sog van Rindel. Fierozzo too went through the reorganisation of comuni under the fascist years: in 1929 it was attached to Sant'Orsola, and it became autonomous again in 1948.
