Borgo Valsugana

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 6,826 · Postal code: 38051

Borgo Valsugana has 6,826 inhabitants in a narrowing of the valley, where the Brenta passes between Monte Ciolino and Monte Rocchetta. It has one distinction no other town in Trentino can claim: its historic centre grew on both banks of the river, whereas elsewhere, Trento included, the old centres stand on one side only. And then there is the name, which has to be read the other way round from what it looks like: it is not the town that takes its name from the valley, it is the valley that takes its name from the town. The Roman settlement was called Ausugum, the valley became Vallis Ausuganea and from that Valsugana; the main street of the old centre is still called corso Ausugum today.

In 1862 a fire destroyed an enormous part of the town, which was largely built of wood, and left hundreds of families without a roof. When they rebuilt, a wide street was opened among the new houses and dedicated to all those who had generously helped from outside: it is still called via Fratelli, the street of the brothers, and a plaque there records why. Before that, Borgo had been a border place for centuries: since Trento was hard to reach from here it was attached to the bishop's county of Feltre, it was Venetian for three years between 1410 and 1413, and then Tyrolean until the Great War.
