Castelnuovo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,035 · Postal code: 38050

The name comes from a castle: beside the church of Santa Margherita, which is at least of the thirteenth century, the remains of a small fortification can still be seen, and the village formed around it. The lords who held it, the da Castelnuovo, managed to make of it a kind of middle ground between the principality of Trento and the county of Feltre: the border ran through here.

The village stands where the Maso torrent runs into the Brenta, at the foot of monte Civerone. The parish church of San Leonardo is of the fifteenth century and the patron is kept on the sixth of November; on the arms, as one would expect, there is a castle with two little towers. After the war industry came here, but the land is still good for fruit and for the vine.
