Telve di Sopra

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 617 · Postal code: 38050

Telve de Sóra in the dialect of the valley, and Obertelfan in a German that has fallen out of use, stands on the slopes of the Colle San Pietro, the hill people here call the Ciolina. All the farmland around it is terraced, held up by dry-stone walls that climb the slope one above the other: they are the shape of the village itself, and can be seen from far away. Above the houses stands the church of San Giovanni del Sassetto, which goes back to the thirteenth century.

On the bell tower of the parish church hangs a bell of 1414, cast in Venice by a Magister Antonius who put his own name on it: it is the oldest dated and signed bell known in the whole of Trentino, protected by the heritage authority, restored and hung back in the tower with the others in 2015. Higher still, in the middle of the Lagorai range, the Ezze alpine hut stands at almost two thousand metres at the head of the Val di Fregio, and in summer cows, sheep, goats and donkeys are taken up there.
