Cimone

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 685 · Postal code: 38060

Every twenty-five years, since 1900, they build a boat here. Two pairs of oxen pull it, nowadays a tractor, and they take it round the hamlets, with a captain, sailors and guards, all dressed as in the nineteenth century. It is called the Barcarola, and it serves to remember the people of Cimone who at the beginning of the twentieth century had to sail for America.

The place is not one single village: it is fourteen hamlets, and the town hall is at Covelo. The first record is of 1180, when Aldrighetto di Castelbarco sent a woodsman, Menego, up to the Bondone to fell trees and put up a farmstead. From 1456 to 1842 Cimone belonged to the Lodron, and to this day it is part, with six other comuni, of the Comun Comunale of the Lagarina.
