Novaledo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,018 · Postal code: 38050

Until 1818 Novaledo had a lake; that year it dried up, and some connect it with the removal of an old timber weir downstream. Along the masi ran the boundary between the bishopric of Trento and that of Feltre: a deed of Conrad II of 1027 says that the goods of the church of Feltre begin at the church of San Desiderio, «in a place called Campolongo».

From the thirteenth century Bavarian and Tyrolean settlers came, and a document of 1585 counts eight German masi, with their names: Beltramhof, Oswaldhof, Torgglhof and the rest. Between 1879 and the early twentieth century about a third of the inhabitants left, nearly all for South America; and in the Great War the village, caught on the front line, was evacuated by the Austrians and its people sent to Lower Austria and to Bohemia.
