Caldonazzo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 3,340 · Postal code: 38052

The Brenta is born from the lake that carries the village's name, just above the houses. Between the church and the cemetery stands Castel Trapp, and on its old walls one can still make out the fresco of the family arms, the red-white-red shield. In 1461 the Trapp left their ancestral castle in Styria and settled here: for more than three hundred years, until 1794, when the last of the line died, Caldonazzo and that family were one and the same thing, and they also owned the Cimbrian plateau above the village.

The church of San Valentino, recorded from the twelfth century, was kept for centuries by a hermit who lived in the house next door, and inside it the dates can be read one after another: the terracotta arches of the portico of 1544, the Trapp-Matsch arms of 1528 in the presbytery, the altarpiece of 1759. Not far off, in a vineyard, in 1872 a fragment of a tomb slab of the seventh or eighth century came to light, with a large cross in relief and the name of the dead man on three lines. During the First World War the population was evacuated to Mitterndorf an der Fischa, in Lower Austria, and fifty-two men from Caldonazzo died or went missing in Austro-Hungarian uniform.
