Levico Terme

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 7,516 · Postal code: 38056

Levico Terme has 7,516 inhabitants at the highest point of the Valsugana valley floor, between the lake that carries its name and the mountains of the Lagorai. The town was made by water: from Monte Fronte come arsenical and ferruginous springs, which Michelangelo Mariani was already citing in 1673 in a history of the Council of Trent, and in the eighteenth century a few scientific publications spread word of their curative powers. In 1860 a bathing society was founded, the spa buildings went up at Vetriolo and the water was carried down into the town; in 1894 the emperor Franz Joseph raised Levico to the rank of city.

Before the spas there were two other stories. One is jurisdictional: temporal power over Levico belonged to the prince-bishop of Trento, but in religious terms the town remained in the diocese of Feltre until 1786, so for centuries it was Trento's and Feltre's at the same time. The other is about self-government: in 1431 the communitas Levigi gave itself a written charter in thirty-nine paragraphs. Then came the First World War, with the front running through the Valsugana: the population was evacuated in haste, both to put it out of danger and because the authorities suspected irredentist sympathies, and was scattered into the inner regions of the empire.

The Most Holy Redeemer, patron of the Christmas Market in the park

📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of July; since 2004 the Christmas Market fills the park

Levico Terme celebrates the Most Holy Redeemer on the third Sunday of July, in the church dedicated to him. Since 2004, inside the park opened in 1905, the Christmas Market is set up, with characteristic little houses along the avenues, open from late November to Epiphany.
