The church of Santa Croce, on via Benacense, is a modern church in Rovereto. Until 1915 there was another of the same name in town, that of the convent of Santa Croce, which stood not far away, on the site later used for a sports ground called Pra delle Moneghe. The new church was built from 1956 to a design by the Rovereto architect Giovanni Tiella, and was consecrated on 1 October 1989 by Archbishop Giovanni Maria Sartori, as a plaque on the outer wall records.
What to see
The gabled façade has plain ornamental arches; the central one contains the portal. The bell tower is a square tower, with the belfry enclosed by two-light openings.
The interior is a single undivided space, with a ceiling of exposed trusses and beams.
Visiting
Since 2003 Santa Croce has no longer been a parish of its own: it has been absorbed into that of Santa Maria. Opening and Mass times should be checked with the parish.
Our editors' tip
The church stands beside the cemetery of Santa Maria, and in the cemetery its designer is buried, Giovanni Tiella, the architect who in the same years also worked on the façade of San Rocco and on the convent of Santa Caterina.
