The church of the Beata Maria Vergine delle Grazie, also called Santa Maria alle Grazie, is a small Baroque church in Rovereto. It stands near the railway station, and is reached by a flight of steps in the garden of piazzale Orsi. It was designed by Andrea Colombo in 1727. Together with the house of Clementino Vannetti it formed the country villa of this noble Rovereto family: here the man of letters and academician used to hold his cultural gatherings.
What to see
Inside, the church has an octagonal dome. A wrought-iron screen, richly decorated with flowers, separates the presbytery from the rest of the building.
The forecourt with its garden, in front of the church, has been rearranged in recent years, precisely to give the little church a fitting setting again.
Visiting
Openings and services should be checked with the parish or with Rovereto town council. From outside the church is reached from the garden of piazzale Orsi.
Our editors' tip
The little church is what remains of the Vannetti villa: it survived the bombing of the Second World War, while the family's house was completely destroyed.
