Sagron Mis

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 183 · Postal code: 38050

Sagron Mis is an anomaly: it is the only municipality in Trentino whose waters end up in the Piave, it is the easternmost in the province, and Trento is more than twice as far away as Belluno. Until the sixteenth century all this was woodland: it was the charcoal burners who cut it down, and on the pastures that followed came the farmsteads and the first clusters of houses.

Then came the mines — gold, mercury, cinnabar — but isolation never allowed real growth, and in the nineteenth century many left. The trade the emigrants took with them was chair-making, and the careghete had a language of their own invention for talking among themselves, the scabelament dei conza, understood also by the chair-makers of Gosaldo, on the other side of the border. In the arms there is a chair, and two discs for the two hamlets that make up the municipality.
