Spormaggiore is the village of the bear. Since 1994 there has been a wildlife park, born inside the European Life Ursus project to bring the brown bear back to the Alps, and the visitor centre is in the Corte Franca, a fourteenth-century building. Besides the bears there are lynx, a wildcat, an otter, eagle owls; and the wolves, which were three at the start and are now eleven.
The village appears for the first time between 1177 and 1184, as Spaurn, in a document of the counts of Appiano. Above the houses stand the ruins of castel Belfort. The road that crosses the village today, the stradón, is recent: in 1950, to let it through, part of the bar Posta had to be knocked down, and the works went on into the early sixties.
