Cavedago

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 530 · Postal code: 38010

Cavedago has no centre: it is a line of scattered farmsteads along the main road that climbs from the Rotaliana plain towards Andalo and Molveno, with the church and the town hall halfway up, between the bridge over the Rio Lavezòl and Maso Canton. That bridge, the Forego, is on the coat of arms, and it is worth looking at closely: it has three arches built one above the other in three different periods, the first in the thirteenth century, then in 1862 and finally in 1916.

Cavedago has been a municipality since 1860, and was one of the smallest in Trentino. In 1927 Fascism erased it into Spormaggiore, in a single municipality called Comune dello Sporo that also took in Sporminore; it became independent again in 1947, but not entirely, because the hamlet of Maso Canton stayed with Spormaggiore and came back only in the nineteen sixties. During the plague of the fifteen hundreds there was a little Gothic church dedicated to Saint Sebastian and Saint Florian on the road towards Fai della Paganella, where the funerals of the plague dead were held: it was pulled down in the seventeen hundreds.
