The name is recorded as Vai between 1177 and 1184, in a document of the counts of Appiano in favour of the collegiate church of San Michele all'Adige: back then the terrace above the Adige valley was high pasture, convenient only in summer. The climb stayed the village's problem until the twentieth century, and the answer was a cable car, the one from Zambana Vecchia, which carried people up in a few minutes.
It ran until 1955 and was then dismantled; meanwhile the mountain behind, the Paganella, was filling with ski lifts and changing the trade of the village, which in winter lives on skiers. In the centre stands the parish church of San Nicolò, and the municipal coat of arms is recent: the council and the provincial government approved it between 1984 and 1985.
