Feast of Our Lady of Loreto
📅 Every year, on 10 December
On 10 December Ziano di Fiemme celebrates its patroness, Our Lady of Loreto, to whom the town's church is dedicated, in Val di Fiemme.
The coat of arms of Ziano di Fiemme, granted by royal decree of 14 January 1932, shows the figure of Venus in her natural state on a blue ground: a naked goddess on the shield of a mountain comune, something that does not happen often and that the sources do not explain. The gonfalon is unusual too, with vertical stripes of white and pink. The name, on the other hand, is of Latin origin and more prosaic: from Zullanum, which in 1188 appears as de Zullano, a local correction of Julianum, that is the estate of a Julius. The village lies in the Val di Fiemme, between the Lagorai range to the south and Monte Cornon to the north, and belongs to the territory of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, whose sawmill it houses.
The mountains that close it to the south have a hard history. On Monte Cauriol, in the Lagorai range, Italians and Austro-Hungarians fought fiercely during the First World War, and the summit was taken by the Italians in 1916; today in the Sadole valley, at sixteen hundred metres, stands the refuge that bears that name. The Second World War ended here just as brutally: between 2 and 4 May 1945 the retreating German troops killed forty-five people at Ziano, Stramentizzo and Molina di Fiemme. Of more everyday matters: from 1917 to 1963 the Val di Fiemme railway passed through here; of Ziano's station nothing remains, it was demolished, while the Roda stop is still standing. And this village, for its size, has given a great many champions to sport, from cross-country skiing to snowboarding and even Formula One.
