Montaione

Province: Florence · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,776 · Postal code: 50050

The legend explains three names at one stroke: Ajone founded Monte Ajone, the girl he married was called Figline like the castle beside it, and the rival who had carried her off was Gambasso. Later a Florentine knight stopped the people of Montaione from sacrificing a girl, Filli, and took for his banner the torn red dress she gave him: hence the da Filicaja and their arms.

The rivalry with Gambassi is in the records too. Glass was blown here, and the licence granted in 1335 to Bartolo Bennati to open a glassworks laid three things on him: to pay fifteen lire of duty, to employ no man of Gambassi nor any other enemy of the comune, and to sell the glasses at two and a half denari, that is half a denaro less than at Gambassi.
