San Miniato

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 27,585 · Postal code: 56028

Every November San Miniato becomes the white truffle capital: its hills rank among the world's great hunting grounds, and the market fair draws gourmets and diggers with jeweller's scales. The rest of the year, the town remains a belvedere of the Via Francigena between Florence and Pisa.

The tower of Frederick II — the emperor willed it; Dante set there the drama of Pier delle Vigne — rises rebuilt on the hill; cathedral and bishops' palaces tell of an old power. Quality tanneries and leather works in the valley recall that Tuscan craftsmanship here is serious business.
