Castelfiorentino celebrates Saint Verdiana on 1 February; a town museum is also dedicated to the saint.
In 1998, at Monte Maggiore, a whale came out of the hills: a skeleton over three million years old, from when the sea was here, and scholars call it the most complete whale fossil ever found in Europe.
The other story belongs to the land: in 1260, after Montaperti, Florence and Siena signed peace here, and Florence left the town its own red lily on a white field, and the name it bears. The patron saint, Verdiana, had herself walled into a cell with two snakes. The Teatro del Popolo, of 1867, has that very peace painted on its curtain. There are 17,489 residents.
