Feast of Saint Stephen
📅 Every year, on 26 December
On 26 December Palazzuolo sul Senio celebrates its patron Saint Stephen; in December the village also comes alive with "Elfi'n Borg", a Christmas trail through the streets of the centre.
Palazzuolo sul Senio is Tuscan by administration and Romagnol by geography: it lies on the Romagna side of the Apennines, in the upper Senio valley, and until 1951 it was in fact called Palazzuolo di Romagna. The territory belonged to the Ubaldini and then to the Pagani — it was to this family that Maghinardo belonged, the man Dante remembers for his misdeeds — until in 1362 the Ubaldini had to hand it over to the Republic of Florence. With neighbouring Firenzuola it formed the original core of the Tuscan Romagna, which is why a village beyond the watershed still belongs to the province of Florence.
The municipal shield shows a woman in arms: popular tradition, taken up by the decree that granted the arms, sees in her Cia degli Ubaldini, granddaughter of Maghinardo and wife of the lord of Forlì, who defended besieged Cesena during the crusade against the people of Forlì. That the locals were a stubborn lot was clear again at the plebiscite of 1860 on annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia: the yes votes were 437 out of 996 entitled to vote, and most of the townspeople did not turn up at all, which was a fairly plain way of making their point.
