Tredozio stands in the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines, along the middle valley of the Tramazzo, in a landscape of clay gullies and woods that now falls partly within the Casentine Forests park. Its old core is the Castrum Treudacium, first named in 925; it belonged to the Guidi counts for nearly three centuries and passed to Florence in 1428, after a long siege. From then on, for five hundred years, it was frontier country between the grand duchy and the Papal States — and therefore smuggling country too. The Guidi lion has stayed on the coat of arms: after the submission to Florence it was kept because it looked like the Florentine marzocco.

The village you see is largely a reconstruction: the earthquake of 10 November 1918 destroyed much of the historic settlement. In 1923 Tredozio passed to the province of Forlì along with nearly all of Tuscan Romagna, bringing the administrative boundaries into line with the geographical ones. From here came Faustino Perisauli, born Pietro Paolo Fantini, who wrote the De Triumpho Stultitiae, a book in which some see the inspiration for Erasmus's Praise of Folly. And on Monte Busca there is a natural curiosity: a small seep of gas that burns in the open air, and that people here call the volcano.
