Marradi

Province: Florence · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,257 · Postal code: 50034

Marradi is in the province of Florence but lies on the Romagna side of the Apennines, and the dialect here is Romagnol: the town is Maré. In 1358, at the Scalelle, the people rose against the mercenary company of Count Lando and scattered it, knowing the ground better than they did. In 1428 Florence took the valley from the Manfredi, and in memory of that a market is still held every Monday morning.

Until the end of the nineteenth century there was no proper road towards Faenza and Florence, and the railway came shortly after. Here in 1885 Dino Campana was born, the poet of the Canti Orfici. On the twenty-ninth of June 1919 an earthquake killed more than a hundred people, and in July 1944 the Germans shot forty-two civilians at Crespino sul Lamone in reprisal.
