Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Sassetta, a municipality of 533 inhabitants in the province of Livorno, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Sassetta was an important castle of the Pisan Republic: the Florentines pulled it down in 1503, and in 1516 they sent the local lords into exile. From the sixteenth century the village belonged to the Ramirez de Montalvo, a Spanish family that had come to Florence with the court of Eleonora of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I.
In 1943 the Jewish orphanage of Livorno was moved up here to escape the bombing: twenty-one children between six and seventeen, with four teachers, housed in a villa in the woods and taken in by the village. In April 1944 the Germans ordered them out: the children were taken to the station at Vada and were already on the train for the camp at Fossoli when an air raid stopped it from leaving. Some escaped, two were caught and deported; the others went back to Sassetta, where the parish priest kept them hidden until the village was liberated on 27 June 1944.
