Bistecca alla Fiorentina T-bone cut of Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers
A T-bone cut from Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers with no seasoning at all: Florence's signature dish.
Read more →The line between the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Sea runs across the headland at Piombino, and Livorno faces both of them. It is a thin ribbon of Tuscan coast squeezed between Pisa and Grosseto, with the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago offshore, Elba and Capraia among them. Its 19 municipalities are a recent design: in 1861 the province was the port city and Elba, no more, and only in 1925 did it take in the Maremma inland of Pisa.
The shore is signposted Costa degli Etruschi and earns the label: at the Gulf of Baratti the sand runs silver and black with iron, and an archaeological park sits behind the beach. Portoferraio is the way into Elba; on the mainland, Piombino, Castagneto Carducci and San Vincenzo, where a fourteenth-century watchtower still stands. In Livorno, walk the churches: the cathedral, the Dutch-German Congregation temple, the Armenian church of St Gregory the Illuminator.
