Bibbona

Province: Livorno · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,209 · Postal code: 57020

Until the eighteenth century the plain was marsh. The marquis Carlo Ginori, who had bought Bibbona in 1738, began to drain it, and by 1868 it was all divided into farms; to shelter the crops from the sea wind they planted the coastal pinewood that is still there. In recent decades the strip behind the beach has filled with campsites and holiday flats.

The name appears at the beginning of the twelfth century and comes, most likely, from an Etruscan personal name. In the eighth century a nobleman of Lucca had founded a monastery down in the plain; then came the castle, and the community gave itself its first statutes in 1490. At the top of the village stands the Rocca, whose upper part fell in the earthquake of 1846; behind it lies the Macchia della Magona, a wood of more than sixteen hundred hectares.
