Lake Massaciuccoli is what remains of a lagoon left shut behind the coast: inside the Chiarone reserve, entrusted to the LIPU since 1985, more than two hundred bird species are counted, from herons to the osprey. Between the station and the village you walk on a boardwalk through lotus flowers.
Above the lake the hills hold the olive groves, the medieval parish church of San Pantaleone at Elici and the remains of the Roman baths of Massaciuccoli. The name comes from Massa Grausi, the large estate of a Lombard called Grauso; the comune was born by splitting from Viareggio on 18 December 1869. There are 22,330 residents.
