Saint Anthony of Padua, patron of Stazzema
📅 Every year, on 13 June
Stazzema celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June.
On the twelfth of August 1944, at Sant'Anna, SS troops and Italian fascists killed five hundred and sixty people: villagers, people from the Versilia and others who had come up to the mountain hamlets to be safe; a hundred of them were children, the youngest twenty days old. Two parish priests, don Innocenzo Lazzeri and don Fiore Menguzzo, offered themselves for their people and were killed with them. At Sant'Anna today there are the ossuary and the museum of the Resistance.
This is the only wholly mountainous comune of the Versilia, and its offices are not at Stazzema but at Pontestazzemese. The names say what was dug here: Gallena comes from silver-bearing galena, and two places are called argentiera, the silver works. On the arms there are two iron rings joined by a lily, set there — so the gonfaloniere wrote in 1860 — in memory of the ironwork done here.
