The Viareggio lighthouse is a maritime lighthouse on the Ligurian Sea, at the mouth of the Burlamacca canal, beside the port infrastructure.
What to see
The structure was built by the Regia Marina in 1863 to light that stretch of coast at night; its present appearance is due to a twentieth-century remodelling.
The complex consists of a tower of circular section in white masonry, 14 metres high, with an internal gallery, ending in a top terrace on which rests the drum of the metal lantern, also of circular section. The tower rises at the north-western corner of a building on a quadrangular plan, on two levels and also in white masonry.
Visiting
The lighthouse is at the mouth of the Burlamacca canal, in Viareggio, beside the port infrastructure. The sources consulted give no visiting arrangements: it is no longer in use and it should be checked whether you can get close.
Our editors' tip
After the building of the outermost breakwater, later given a lighthouse of its own that is more modern, this lighthouse limited its function to the inner area of the canal port; today it is no longer in use.
