Comano

Province: Massa-Carrara · Region: Tuscany · Population: 755 · Postal code: 54015

Comano appears for the first time in a document of 938: king Hugh of Provence gave the village and its castle to his wife Bertha as a wedding present. Not far off, at Crespiano, stands a Romanesque pieve rebuilt in 1079 and later altered in Renaissance and Baroque times.

In the fourteenth century these lands belonged to the Malaspina, and their lords bore a long title: lords of Fosdinovo, Marciaso, Comano and the Lands of the Whites. Then came the marquisate of Fivizzano and, from 1478, the Florentine Republic. Comano became a municipality by French decree in 1811, but as early as 1814, with the Restoration, it was absorbed back into Fivizzano: definitive autonomy came only after the First World War.
