Podenzana

Province: Massa-Carrara · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,142 · Postal code: 54010

Podenzana was a statelet: an independent marquisate of the Malaspina, with a hundred and ten families counted in 1559. In 1704, when the French and Spanish invaded the Lunigiana and called the feudal lords to swear loyalty to Philip V, the marquis Alessandro did not go and shut himself in his castle.

The French stormed it in March 1705, he fled with his family towards La Spezia, and they blew up with mines all the fortifications of the village, leaving only the castle standing. Back after the French defeat at Turin, Alessandro bought the marquisate of Aulla from the imperial chamber for thirty thousand gold florins. In 1708, in the palace of the Poderetto, he brought the branches of the Malaspina to an agreement: not to sell their fiefs to anyone else and to recognise no lord but the emperor.
