Montescudaio

Province: Pisa · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,958 · Postal code: 56040

The name is Lombard, but no one knows what it speaks of: perhaps of a scutarius, a shield-maker, perhaps of the sculdascio, the officer who collected the taxes and kept the militia. Not far off is Guardistallo, which in Lombard means the guard's lodging: two names close together that tell how this district was held. The village appears in 1091.

The counts of Montescudaio rebelled more than once against Pisa, but when in the fifteenth century the countryside passed to Florence they were quick to take the winning side. It was the inhabitants who got rid of them: with Florence's leave they made themselves a commune, wrote their own statutes and drove the counts out of the castle. The commune ended on 10 May 1648, when the whole area became a fief of the Ridolfi marquises. In 1846 an earthquake brought down the old houses of the castle.
