Vino Nobile carries its calling card in the name: praised in the eighteenth century as "king of all wines", in 1980 it was among the very first Italian reds to earn DOCG status, and the historic cellars dug beneath Renaissance palaces are toured by descending into the tuff. Montepulciano is a masterpiece town contested for centuries between Siena and Florence, its Piazza Grande a ready-made film set.

Angelo Ambrogini — Poliziano, the humanist — was born here in 1454. Outside the walls, Sangallo's temple of San Biagio is Renaissance perfection in travertine. On August's last Sunday, the Bravìo delle Botti sends barrels rolling uphill between the districts.
