Province of Siena, Italy: Towns & Things to Do

Four UNESCO World Heritage sites in a single province: in Tuscany only Florence matches that. Siena is the administrative seat of 35 municipalities at the southern end of the region, reaching east to the Umbrian border with Perugia and Terni and south towards Lazio. It is Tuscany's second-largest province by area but only eighth by population, and the distances between one small town and the next show it.

Most visits begin in Siena itself, where Piazza del Campo and the cathedral stand a few minutes apart. After that the towns take over: the towers of San Gimignano, countable from a long way off; Pienza and Montepulciano to the south-east; Montalcino, whose Duomo pairs with the church of Madonna del Soccorso. Chianciano Terme still draws people who come for the thermal waters.
