Feast of Blessed Antonio Patrizi
📅 Every year, on the Tuesday after Easter
On the Tuesday after Easter Monticiano, a municipality of 1,505 inhabitants in the province of Siena, celebrates its patron Blessed Antonio Patrizi.
In 1266 the Republic of Siena took Monticiano by force and had its walls and the fortress of Castelvecchio pulled down: the offence had been giving shelter to the Ghibellines who fled after the defeat at Benevento. Before that the castle had belonged to the bishop of Volterra, who held jurisdiction over it from the end of the twelfth century, and later the grand duke granted it in fief to the Pannocchieschi d'Elci, who held it from 1629 to 1749. On the edge of the municipality, on the river Farma, are the thermal baths of Petriolo.
At the plebiscite of 1860, 723 people voted and every one of them said yes to union with the Kingdom of Italy: not a single vote against. Eighty years later the village was the base where the first partisan groups of the Siena area organised themselves, and the territory became the operating zone of the Garibaldi brigade «Spartaco Lavagnini». At Scalvaia ten young men who had taken to the woods rather than be called up were shot in reprisal; on the night of 3 to 4 June 1944 partisans and Germans fought in the village square, and two young men from Monticiano were killed there.
