Saint Fortunatus and Poggio Civitate
📅 Every year, on 12 July
Murlo celebrates Saint Fortunatus on 12 July, in the area of the Etruscan site of Poggio Civitate.
At Poggio Civitate there was an Etruscan palace of the sixth century before Christ, and what the excavations have taken out of it now sits in the bishop's palace at Vescovado, turned into a museum. The village's name perhaps comes from the Latin murulus, a walled place; but the oldest municipal arms bore rampant mice, and some think instead of mus, mouse.
The palace is episcopal in earnest: from 1589 to 1778 Murlo was a fief of the bishop of Siena, an ecclesiastical lordship with its own pieve, San Fortunato. The municipality is a scattered one — people live at Vescovado and Casciano — and in its hills one counts a dozen castles and as many pievi, many of them reduced to ruins. Here they grow the fagiola di Venanzio, a nearly extinct bean.
