San Quirico d'Orcia

Province: Siena · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,680 · Postal code: 53027

Sigeric, archbishop of Canterbury, coming back from Rome between 990 and 994, wrote down his stages: San Quirico is the twelfth, and he calls it Sce Quiric. For the pilgrims who passed there was the hospital of Santa Maria della Scala, of the same body that kept one in front of the cathedral of Siena; it served as a surgery until the nineteen-sixties, and then was turned into flats.

In June 1944 the front came through: Allied bombs brought down two towers, one in the middle of the Horti Leonini and one at the entrance to the town, the Germans mined the roads and the fields, and forty-three people of San Quirico lost their lives. On the portal of the collegiate church, meanwhile, two crocodiles have faced each other for centuries, carved in the architrave.
