Buonconvento

Province: Siena · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,182 · Postal code: 53022

The name means «fortunate place». On the twenty-fourth of August 1313 the emperor Henry VII died here. The story went that a friar had poisoned him with the host; in fact he had caught anthrax, and anthrax was then treated with arsenic compresses: when his bones were examined, the arsenic was really there. The same examination showed that the face Tino di Camaino carved for him was not his.

The walls were begun in 1371 and finished twelve years later, with only two gates: the Sienese one to the north and the Roman one to the south, which the Germans destroyed in 1944. Inside, the museum of sacred art of the Val d'Arbia keeps works by Duccio and the Lorenzetti; outside the walls, in an old vat-house, there is the museum of Sienese sharecropping.
