The ravelin of Costacciaro is shaped like the prow of a ship: it was designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, who worked here for the Montefeltro from 1477.

The castle had been built by Gubbio around 1250, as a bridgehead against the Perugian side at Sigillo; the hill belonged to a man called Stacciaro, and the name passed from Castrum Collis Stacciarii to Castrum Costacciarii, in 1300. In the church of San Francesco, where the blessed Tommaso, a Camaldolese monk, lies buried, a restoration brought Templar symbols back to light. On the second Sunday of November the 1,283 residents race the barrels, for the new wine.
