Sigillo

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,468 · Postal code: 06028

In Sigillo, when a big expense comes up, people still say: it costs me more than salt in Perugia. It is the memory of the salt war, after which, in the mid-sixteenth century, the town ended up in the Papal State.

Before that came the Suillates, the Umbrian people Pliny names; then the Roman municipium of Suillum, on the Via Flaminia, three days' walk from Rome. Frederick II destroyed it in 1230 because it sided with the Guelphs, and Perugia rebuilt it in 1274, laying it out in the four quarters that are still there. On the night between the ninth and the tenth of December the 2,468 residents light the bonfires of the Venuta.
