Until 1927 "the province of Perugia" meant Umbria: it covered the whole region and once reached as far as Rieti and the Sabina, before the province of Terni was carved out of its southern third. What is left is still the larger half, about two-thirds of Umbria's land and people, with 59 municipalities, more than any other Umbrian province. It was the homeland of the ancient Umbri, then Roman territory, then part of the Papal States until the late nineteenth century. Perugia is the capital; Lake Trasimeno, central Italy's largest lake, sits in the middle of it.
Assisi draws the crowds, for the Basilica of San Francesco above all. The rest holds up on its own: Perugia's Fontana Maggiore on Piazza IV Novembre, Gubbio's Palazzo dei Consoli, Norcia and its Basilica of San Benedetto, and the hill towns of Spoleto, Todi and Spello.
